Polytechnic of Leiria electric bicycles travel 100 thousand kilometers
The electric bicycles of the Polytechnic of Leiria have already covered 100,000 kilometers, avoiding the emission of about 17,000 kilos of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in Leiria, Marinha Grande, Peniche and Caldas da Rainha. Since June 2018, the U-Bike project has served 382 users, including students, teachers, researchers and technicians of the Polytechnic of Leiria, in its various campuses.
“This is a very important milestone for us, because it shows the commitment of the Polytechnic of Leiria to provide environmentally responsible and sustainable soft mobility means that, while contributing to reducing the pressure on the various campuses, was an excellent measure. The adhesion of the academic community has been very positive, and this is evidenced by the achievement of this goal a little over a year after the U-Bike project awarded the first bikes », considers Rui Pedrosa. With the success demonstrated by the U-Bike project is the time to verify the positive contagion effect in the municipalities of the region of Leiria and Oeste with the emergence of bike sharing programs open to all citizens, as well as interventions to improve the infrastructure promoting the use of bicycles, dedicated or shared bike paths, says Rui Pedrosa.
With the U-Bike project, the Polytechnic of Leiria intends to make the community aware of the use of more sustainable means of transportation, reducing the impact of motor vehicles in the cities where it is located, and its various campuses, as well as motivating the adoption of Healthier life.
There are currently 183 electric bicycles circulating under this project in Leiria, Marinha Grande, Caldas da Rainha and Peniche.
